Birding Sites
There are so many great sites in Wrangell town, on Wrangell Island, on the surrounding islands and on the Stikine River. A few of the easily accessible sites, or favorite sites for bird viewing are listed here. There are also Forest Service Cabins on the Stikine River and other near by areas if you want to spend a weekend of fun and birdwatching.
City of Wrangell Sites:
City Park: Watch for Harlequin Duck, Barrow's Goldeneye, Varied Thrush, Chestnut-backed Chickadee
Mt. Dewey Trail: Watch for Swainson's Thrush, Hermit Thrush, Marbled Murrelet, Bald Eagle
Petroglyph Beach: Watch for Surf Scoters, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Bald Eagles,
Shakes Island: Watch for Northwestern Crow, Black-billed Magpie
Volunteer Park Trail: Watch for Varied Thrush, Dark-eyed Junco, Hairy Woodpecker, Pacific-slope Flycatcher
Muskeg Meadows Golf Course: Watch for Tree swallows, Common Snipe, Hairy Woodpecker, Fox Sparrow, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Pacific-slope Flycatcher, Ravens
Zimovia Highway Bike Path: Watch for ducks and shorebirds, Blue Herons, Bald Eagles
Stikine River Sites:
Sergief Island: Watch for Rare shorebirds, Snow Geese, Black Swifts, Vaux's Swift, American Pipit
Delta: Bald Eagles, Canada Goose, Snow Geese, Gulls - including Bonaparte's Herring, Glaucous, Glaucous-winged, California, Mew, Ring-billed, Thayer's and Black legged Kittiwake.
Mallard Slough: One of the best places to watch for a variety of shorebird species during spring and fall migration, including western sandpiper, dunlin, surfbird.
