WATER CONSERVATION TIPS

WATER CONSERVATION TIPS

Summer has finally arrived and processing season along with it.  Currently our reservoirs are nearly full, but water consumption has increased dramatically (20-30%) over the past week.  Water consumption is expected to continue increasing over the coming weeks as processing season ramps up. Coupled with the warm, dry weather, it is time to consider what measures we can all take to conserve water.

At this time, we have not yet met the criteria for instituting the Borough’s Water Shortage Management Plan and are sending out this reminder on ways we can all do our part to conserve water, ensuring we will have adequate supply through the summer.

Water Department staff continually monitor reservoir levels and consumption rates, to help inform decisions on implementing responses described in the Water Shortage Management Plan, which can be found at https://www.wrangell.com/publicworks/water-shortage-management-plan-0

Please review this and the information on the following page for tips on how you can reduce your water consumption and speak with your friends and family about ways you can implement these methods in your homes and workplaces.

As of right now we are still in good shape with a good water supply and the goal here is to inform people where water levels are so there are fewer surprises if the situation changes.  Resources for tips on conserving water can be found on our Website at https://www.wrangell.com/community/water-conservation and below.

Please reach out to the Public Works Department at (907) 874-3904 with any questions.

WATER CONSERVATION TIPS

The City and Borough of Wrangell is asking all customers to voluntarily conserve water. Small changes made at home can make a big difference when it comes to conserving our water resource.

Water Saving Tips Inside the Home

  • Turn-off the faucet while washing your hands and brushing your teeth.
  • When shaving, use a sink filled with rinse water.
  • Take short showers instead of baths.
  • Fill the sink with water to wash dishes or to pre-rinse dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.
  • Never use your toilet as a wastebasket.
  • Repair or replace leaking plumbing pipes and fixtures. If replacing a toilet, consider a low-flow toilet that use 1.6 gallons per flush (gpf) or less. (Did you know that a leak the size of a pinhole in a home water system can waste more than 4,000 gallons of water per month?)

Water Recycling Tips

  • Place a bucket in the shower to catch water that is wasted while you adjust your shower water temperature and recycle this water for plants or other watering uses.
  • Other sources of water that can be recycled easily for other watering purposes include:
    • - Pet dishes
    • - Flower vases
    • - Leftover water from cooking or drinking
    • - Dehumidifier water

Water Saving Tips Outside the Home

  • Use a broom, not a hose, to clean driveways, steps, decks and sidewalks.
  • Wash the car with water from a bucket. If a hose is used, control the flow with an automatic shut-off nozzle.
  • Water the lawn or garden during the coolest part of the day and avoid windy days.
  • Use mulch around shrubs and garden plants to reduce evaporation from the soil surface and cut down on weed growth.
