Hiking Trails and Camping

Along Mt. Dewey Trail

Wrangell has some excellent hiking and camping opportunities.

There are trails rated easy to hard.  There are trails both easily-accessible near town and those that require transportation.  Below is a list of trails on Wrangell island:

Mt. Dewey Trail

Volunteer Loop Trail

Rainbow Falls Trail

Eastern Passage Paddle Craft Trail

Wrangell Parks and Recreation maintains an RV Park & Campground at Shoemaker Bay Recreation area with picnic tables, fire pits and electrical hook-ups.

Tent camping is permitted at City Park, located about one mile from the Ferry Terminal, and at Shoemaker Park, located approximately four and a half miles from town.

The U.S. Forest Service maintains numerous cabins, campgrounds, trails and scenic overlooks in the Wrangell Ranger District, which includes Wrangell Island, the mainland and surrounding islands.  All of the cabins, with the exception of one, require boat or plane transportation.  The campgrounds on Wrangell Island are more remote but accessible by vehicle.
