Wrangell is a true Alaskan town whose residents appreciate the beauty that surround them and care about their community. Crime is low and residents feel safe. There is a strong sense of community that makes it a wonderful place to raise a family.
Wrangell's climate is similar to that of much of southeast Alaska and Pacific Northwest coastal areas. Winters are mild with some snow and temperatures in the 20's and 30's. Summers are cool with light winds. Wrangell gets about 80 inches of rain a year, less rainfall on average than most of Southeast Alaska.
The downtown district is within walking distance of the waterfront, providing easy access to businesses and services. Wrangell's 2300 residents have access to a full complement of retail services, including several grocery stores; hardware and building supply stores, clothing and gift stores, restaurants, modern banking facilities, travel services, florist and a variety of business support services. The wild beauty and cultural heritage of southeast Alaska provides inspiration for many area artists whose works are available in Wrangell's shops and galleries.
Approximately 315 students are enrolled in the Wrangell school district serving students from Kindergarten though 12th grade. All schools have computers in the classroom and computer labs for use by the students. The University of Alaska Southeast offers college video/audio conferencing courses and correspondence courses.
Attached to the local high school is a community recreational facility housing a swimming pool, weight room, and racquetball court. The adjacent community center offers a gym, stage, and multipurpose room. Other recreational offerings include a skating rink, tennis courts, indoor and outdoor shooting ranges, trails, baseball fields, archery range, and year round recreational programs for both children and adults. Wrangell's new 9-hole golf course and driving range, the only regulation golf course in Southeast Alaska, is challenging and open year round.
The Wrangell Medical Center, an 8-bed hospital and 14 bed long term care facility also houses the Tideline Clinic with 3 resident physicians. The hospital maintains a visiting physician clinic for more specialized treatment. A state health clinic offers care through a resident nurse practitioner. Dentists and one chiropractor practice locally.
Wrangell is a safe community... A very low crime rate. The community looks out for its children and is a great place to raise a family.
