Recreation Opportunties and Resources
Wow.. so much to see and do!
Wrangell has trails from easy to hard, short to overnight, flat or steep, close to town or remote.
Kayaking and canoeing can be an afternoon activity- or a longer chartered tour.
Bike around town, take the bike path to Shoemaker Recreation area, or bike the 100 miles of Tongass Forest Roads on Wrangell Island
Camp in one of the 21 US Forest Service Cabins in the Wrangell Ranger District. Access to all but one is by either boat and/or float plane. All are located in unique settings to access wildlife, incredible views, great hunting, fishing, or kayaking opportunities, and spectacular scenery and surrounding environment.
Stikine River offers birding and wildlife opportunities, fishing, sightseeing, natural hotsprings and glacier viewing -- not to mention the fun of a jetboat ride. Flightseeing the river as well as the coastal mountain range is a wonderful perspective.
And fishing... our pristine and protected waters offer excellent fishing. Whether you are experienced or a novice Wrangell is perfect. All 5 species of salmon are present, as well as an assortment of bottom fish, including halibut.
Anan Wildlife Observatory is the place to see bears during July and August. Located just south of Wrangell Island on the mainland, a trip to Anan provides a boat or flightseeing opportunity and a hike on a short but beautiful trail to the observation deck for a chance to see both brown and black bear.
There is also walking the docks to look at the different yachts and commercial fishing boats, searching for petroglyphs on Petroglyph Beach State Historic Park, and hiking Mt. Dewey in the center of town for look down on the community and Zimovia Straits.
